Seeking Bay View Bash Sustainability Intern
ABOUT US
Kompost Kids Inc. is an all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to educating the public, businesses, and institutions about the benefits of compost and to reclaim organic materials from landfills to create soil for community-based agriculture projects.
DESCRIPTION
- Responsible for planning and implementing Kompost Kids Inc. composting program at the 2015 Bay View Bash, Milwaukee’s largest all-volunteer street festival.
- Help the event become a zero-waste event.
- Coordinate sustainability efforts including compostable materials donation and cost comparison, and development of a secondary sort facility. We welcome new ideas!
- Coordination, creation and implementation of materials related to the composting effort like signage for receptacles and receptacle identification.
- Document procedures and outcomes. Produce a manual for event composting.
- Coordinate with the City of Milwaukee to obtain the final weight of recyclables.
- Track measurables like quantity of trash, compostables and recycling.
- The intern will represent Kompost Kids Inc. at regular Bash meetings
- Reports via email to supervisor weekly or as needed, in person or by phone monthly to board.
- Position begins May 15, 2015 and ends October 15, 2015.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Associates degree or comparable level of education.
- Demonstrated experience with event or program planning and execution.
- Ability to supervise volunteers.
- Knowledge of MS excel, creation of graphs and other report necessary functions.
- Familiarity with Google Docs and Apps a plus.
- A cheerful attitude, sense of humor and a willingness to get dirty.
LOCATION
Bay View, Milwaukee. The Bash is held on Kinnickinnic Ave between Potter and Clement.
TIME COMMITMENT
Bash meetings are typically 1-hour /month. The amount of time it takes to complete the job description (approximately 10 hours per week). The intern will need to be present the day of the Bash – this shift is minimally 13 hours.
REQUIREMENTS
Driver’s license, transportation, access to email and the web, ability to pass a background check, ability to lift 10 or more lbs, and a passion for composting and the environment.
COMPENSATION
The internship is unpaid but it is a great opportunity to be involved in the local composting and environmental movement. The intern will gain hands-on experience in planning, goal setting, and implementation of support for a non-profit organization and a large local event. Kompost Kids will provide letters of reference based on performance.
