Growing Local Fertility – New Report

The Highfields Center for Composting and the Institute for Local Self-Reliance recently collaborated on an exhaustive new report on community composting that featured Kompost Kids and similar organizations in other cities that are spreading the gospel of local disposal and soil regeneration (see page 47). The report goes deeply into the whys, hows, and whats of community composting at a variety of scales, from “home hubs” to larger processors, both nonprofit and fee-based. Browse the report on ILSR’s website or download directly from our resources page.

A companion report titled “The State of Composting in the U.S.”  tackles composting at the municipal level, featuring best practices and entry barriers to large-scale composting efforts around the country, drawing on extensive survey data from states. A new popular reason to love compost and advocate for its adoption at every level is its proven ability to mitigate climate change through its capacity as a carbon sink. As if we needed another excuse to get busy making dirt.
