Free Compost!
Our site at Auer and Gordon in Riverwest, lovingly renovated a few years ago, now cycles toward the public entrance to the nature preserve and offers a self-serve model of compost screening. Compost is there for the taking, and the public is welcome to visit our site to learn about how to produce first-rate local compost with rudimentary tools and materials. Our system is
Compost Curb Appeal
As with its backyard counterpart, community composting follows the time-honored commandment Thou Shalt Be a Good Neighbor. Although some of us struggle to remember that a heap of rotting kitchen garbage and leaves isn’t inherently beautiful to most people, we do try to take seriously the aesthetic and olfactory concerns of our neighbors. And while our primary beneficiaries are generally microorganisms, earthworms, and soil structural
Save the Dates, Upcoming Events
As we shake of the sluggishness of winter, the Kompost Kids are gearing up for an active spring. Come join us for compost turnings, tabling events, and community outreach. Our sites are thawed out and warming up, and as usual, there’s a lot of maintenance and tidying to do. Four exciting events in April. April 16 – Compost Turning and Education in River West
The Kitchen Scavenger: From Scraps to Broth
I have a tendency to clean out my mom’s fridge and freezer when she goes on vacation. By “clean” I mean that I use random scraps (parmesan rinds, bread crust) and ends of veggies (and sometimes fruit – like an apple!) that are nearing expiration and add this to the frozen bags of veggie ends, chicken bones, and whatever else I might be storing

The Kompost Kids organization is lucky and grateful to be welcoming two excellent and accomplished board members to our leadership team. Both will leverage their academic backgrounds, professional expertise, and personal commitment to our tireless cause of organics diversion, local disposal, and community education in Milwaukee and beyond. Renee Scampini is a Milwaukee native and current UW-Milwaukee Urban Studies Ph.D. student with a background
Make it a Kompost Kids Holiday
Beat the Black Friday blues by skipping it altogether and outfit your family and friends in Kompost Kids tee shirts this holiday season. Our supporters know that our operating budget comes from the small courier fees we charge from our sponsor businesses and grant money. We are a frugal enterprise, to be sure, but we are always looking for ways to boost our reach,
Field Trip the Farm
Original Post 2015. 2018 Edit: The Farm rebranded in 2017 with a new name, Blue Ribbon Organics, keeping the same great partnership and service. The Kompost Kids’ partnership with Blue Ribbon Organics (formerly The Farm) in Caledonia goes back nearly to our founding. For years, they have helped us finish our rough compost into a fine-screened soil product suitable for large-scale donations to new community
Bay View Bash Diverts Literally a Ton
Let us take this belated opportunity to extend a ton-size thank you to all our awesome volunteers who made this year’s Bay View Bash a smashing success. We diverted over 2,020 pounds of organics from the all-day street festival, more than doubling last year’s yield. We couldn’t have done it without the intrepid people power – both stalwart regulars and promising new recruits from Rufus
The Bay View Bash is Upon Us
Sign up now to volunteer for this year’s Bay View Bash, in which Kompost Kids play the illustrious role of managing the waste stream, maximizing sustainability, and offering characteristic good humor as we pick through gooey festival trash in search of the black gold potentialities that lie within – too often untapped – every good street fair. It’s a massive feat of organization and planning, and
