At long last, after many months of anticipation, we’ve secured a lease on a city-owned parcel of land in Bay View, where our new Demonstration Site will be built out in the course of the next few months.
There’s a lot to do, but the site is rapidly transforming into a new, semi-permanent home for our organization, lending us the stability and space we need to grow our operations, improve our demonstration techniques, and continue to develop our compost product.
Thanks to all who have helped with the site clearing, trash pickup, and grading.
Kompost Kids Treasurer Brian Williams-Van Klooster deserves a giant kudos for getting this project up and running, from the early days of researching available plots, to hashing out the lease details with the Port Authority, to conceiving of the new site plan, and now, to laying out the structures and masterminding the carpentry.
The site is located at 1980 South Marina Drive in Bay View. Our sign is up, we are accepting contributions in the receptacle outside the fence, and we are gradually setting up shop.
The site build out is a major effort, and we will be hosting a work day on May 24, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. We’ll be raising a shed, constructing garden beds, tidying up, and setting up compost bins and other amenities. Cookout at noon.
10:00 AM – Come work!
12:00 PM – Cookout & potluck
Please dress appropriately for weather and to work and get dirty! If you’d like to bring a dish to share, that’s wonderful too. We will have hotdogs and a few other things on the grill.
